Metal Staircase Design: Getting The Detail Right

Metal staircase design in a building is rarely a simple question of access. More often, a client — a commercial company or a private homeowner — wants to be intentional about how they use and present their space.

Let’s have a look at what metal staircases bring to a space, and how a metal fabricator fits in.

A Quick Summary

Metal staircase design is at two extremes: functional access stairs and feature staircases. The latter work best when the fabricator, architect and interior designers consider the wider space from an early stage.

From Practical Access To A Feature Staircase

Metal staircases tend to fall into two loose categories. One is the basic fire escape staircase, which is purely functional. It gets you down to the ground as economically and effectively as possible.

At the other end is the feature staircase. At Formost we have worked with clients occupying two floors of a larger building who create an opening between them and put a staircase in the middle of their own space.

That is never just a means of getting from one floor to another, because this can already be achieved elsewhere. They want something that says, ‘This is us. This is our space.’ It is always high-spec and high-finish.

There’s a big difference between a functional outdoor metal staircase design, and a staircase intended to shape the feel of an interior.

What Does A Metal Staircase Say About A Space?

For the work that Formost does, interior metal staircase designs usually leans towards the contemporary, but that does not require a complicated form.

The metal staircases we make are rarely traditional. Clients are normally looking for something they see as modern. That could be a spiral, but it does not have to be.

We have made rectangular staircases where there was nothing unusual about the basic shape, but there was much more consideration in the materials, handrail and balustrading. One example was a stair we did for the Hylo building, near Old Street in London; it was finished in black with a complex mesh, vertical panels and an almost separate handrail. It was simple, but it had something about it.

The staircase should play an important role in the feel of the space. To get the effect of a lighter-looking structure, you need to see it from different angles as part of the interior.

A Simple Focal Point.

A focal point does not need to be busy or overdesigned.

Some of the best staircases are simple. You could apply that to almost any product. The simplest-looking products often have the detail absolutely spot on.

It is not the complexity. We aim, in these cases, to make something simple and do it absolutely right. The staircase has to balance and work as an overall form, it cannot just be something with a few nice bits added to it.

Steel, Timber, Glass and Visual Lightness

Steel staircases can also act as the structure around which other materials are built.

What we often find is timber tread material over a steel framework. The framework can become almost invisible once clad, so the character comes from the timber. We add something simple and elegant for the handrail and balustrading, creating a contrast between the two.

Steel is far stronger than timber, so you can create more structure with less material. You can make something large but light-looking, allowing more light and air through the space.

Glass is also used, predominantly for balustrading, although some designs we have worked with have specified glass treads.

Starting the Design Process Early.

No metal staircase designer begins with a standard space. Before finishes are discussed, the staircase has to fit the building. In a way, they are all bespoke because the staircase has to fit the space. No two buildings are the same. In our experience, we have never made two staircases that were the same. They have been similar, but each has been individual.

We would say: involve the fabricator right at the beginning. The sooner, the better. If the staircase is going to balance with everything else, the person designing it needs to know what is going on around it.

The staircase should be part of the interior rather than simply a means of getting between floors. It has to look as though it belongs. Working with architects and interior designers can be an absolute joy when everyone is trying to reach the same overall feel.

Gary Bennett, Director and Lead Designer at Formost Fabrications said “Staircases are among the most complex things we make and some of my favourites. You can stand next to one with the client and think, ‘We did that.’ It is a nice thing to design, fabricate and install, and see that work bring the space to life”

FAQs

What kinds of spaces suit a bespoke metal staircase?

Gary generally sees feature staircases working best in larger or more open spaces, where the structure can be viewed properly. However, steel can also suit a smaller space because its strength allows for a lighter-looking structure using less material.

Can a metal staircase feel warm rather than industrial?

Yes, although the wider interior matters. Timber treads, tactile handrails and carefully selected finishes can soften the steel, but Gary believes the best results come when the entire space has been designed with the staircase in mind.

Is outdoor metal staircase design always purely functional?

External metal staircases are often fire escapes or access stairs, so function, durability and compliance tend to lead the brief. That does not prevent the proportions, finish and relationship with the building from being properly considered.

Can a metal staircase become a focal point without looking overdesigned?

Yes. Gary’s preference is often for a simple overall form with excellent detailing, balance and finish, rather than complexity added for its own sake.

What materials can be combined with steel staircases?

Timber is commonly used for treads or to clad a steel structure, while glass is frequently used in balustrading. Formost can also coordinate with specialist partners when a design calls for materials or processes outside its in-house fabrication work.

How early should a fabricator join the design process?

As early as possible. Early input allows the staircase, surrounding structure, materials and interior scheme to be developed together, reducing compromises later.

Are metal staircases required to meet UK building regulations?

Yes. The relevant safety and building requirements need to be built into the staircase design from the start, rather than checked only once the form has been decided.

Can Formost work with architects and interior designers?

Yes. Gary particularly values collaborations where everyone is working towards the same overall feel, even when they bring different technical knowledge and design ideas to the project.

Does Formost fabricate and install its staircases in-house?

Formost fabricates the main steel elements in-house and handles the staircase as an integrated design and manufacturing process. Where timber, glass or specialist processes are involved, the team can work with trusted external partners and coordinate the finished installation.

What if I only have an early idea?

Gary says most clients have some sense of direction, even if they cannot yet express it as a finished brief. Formost can work with that starting point and help develop it into a practical staircase design.

Fabrication and Install of Stainless Steel Worktops and Splashbacks to Existing Kitchen Cabinets

Project Summary

Client: Copthorne Social Club (local not-for-profit community organisation)

What we delivered: 2x stainless steel worktops and 4x splashbacks, supplied and fitted

Material: 304 stainless steel, 1.5mm thick

Finish: 240 silicone grit

Key aim: Make the kitchen quicker and easier to clean, and improve day-to-day capability

Completion: Dec 2025

Job Ref No: FF6868

Copthorne Social Club wanted to upgrade the kitchen in their premises on a budget, without ripping it out and starting again. Retaining the existing carcassing and door fronts would keep costs down and keep disruption to their operations to a minimum. Like most old buildings, there are no straight lines – in this situation custom fabrication is usually a better solution than trying make an off-the-shelf product fit.

Installing stainless steel around existing cabinetry, work surfaces, and requires accuracy and care.

The brief was simple and practical. The club wanted a hygienic, easy to clean kitchen to cope better with busy service, as part of general upgrades to streamline their kitchen area. Stainless steel is the obvious answer for commercial environments, as it is hard wearing and can be fabricated with a minimum number of joins, which reduces cleaning time.

Process

Initial contact

Copthrone Social Club gave our office a call, and discussed their plans for the kitchen upgrade with one of our staff.

We discussed some key information:

Design brief

The client described their kitchen to one of our designers – they were improving their kitchen, but weren’t doing a full refit. They wanted stainless steel, were replacing the sink, and having electrical and plumbing work done to tidy up existing services. A new sink would be purchased, and they would provide us the spec so we could allow for the cutout.

Requirements – Basic discussion of what problem the client wants to solve, how they want to solve it. We listen and make suggestions on design details, costs, and offer any alternative ideas we have for cheaper options, durability, aesthetics, or shorter lead times.

Package of works – Is the work part of a bigger package of works that we will need to work with – site access, work that happens before or after our installation.

Decisions still need to be made by the client – e.g. discussing finish with interior designer.

Budget – if known.

Does it fit our manufacturing capabilities?

We discussed the kitchen size, edge detail, and fitting requirements to determine that we have the skills and tooling to handle the required fabrication.

We have a wide range of capability in-house, and also have specialist suppliers and subcontractors to meet unusual requirements.

Location

Copthorne is very close to our base in Smallfield, so it was cost effective to supply and install.

We discuss with clients on a project-by-project basis what will work – we have fabricated items that have been shipped internationally and installed by local installers, and as a general rule we can install cost effectively in London and throughout the south-east with our own installers. For large projects (e.g. high end staircases), we can install in most parts of the UK.

Timeline.

The client told us when they needed the kitchen to be completed. We discussed lead times, and client approvals needed, and upcoming events the kitchen would need to be in operation for.

Quote

Preliminary Site Visit

We organised a site visit to measure the carcass, check the condition of the existing worktop substrate, look at fitting requirements, services, site access for install.

Where possible, we organise a site visit as soon as possible.

When can the site be accessed?

Quote

We sent a quote to the client, with a sketch outlining the extent and scope of the work.

Invoice

When the quote was approved, an invoice was issued.

Invoicing schedules are agreed with the client on a project-by-project basis.

Fabrication

Detailed requirements agreed

After payment was received, we had a further discussion with the client about the requirements, building on the original brief with more detail. The client had chosen their new sink and tap, so the specification and dimensions could be confirmed with the client’s suppliers. The client revised the top line of the splashback following some work on the services, and the design was revised accordingly. Doors and drawers were checked for fitment, so that our installers wouldn’t have any surprises.

In design terms – the splashbacks unify the space. While it is not a kitchen that is in the sight of customers, it’s still important that everything looks good.

Detailed survey

We attended site for a detailed survey – it takes time to measure to check all the dimensions, so this work is done once the project has been confirmed as a job.

Shop drawings for approval.

With the detailed design work completed, shop drawings were provided to the client for signoff prior to manufacturing.

Installation

A date was agreed with the client for install, and when fabrication was complete, our install team went to site and installed the worktops and splashbacks.

Fabrication Details

Worktops and splashbacks, fabricated in 304 stainless steel, 1.5mm thick. 240 grit finish.

Material:

304 is a grade of stainless steel alloy widely used in commercial kitchens, and it helped the client manage cost while still getting the performance benefits they needed. The other option would have been 316 – which is more resistant to some chemicals and salt, but is more expensive. Unless it’s specifically designed as a seafood kitchen where salt exposure will be high, 304 works for kitchens, and is cheaper.

Finish:

We specified a 240 silicone grit finish, with a brushed grain running in the direction of the longest length. Grain direction is not just cosmetic; it does affects how light moves across the surface, and how consistent the finish looks from different angles – but It also supports straightforward maintenance, because routine cleaning follows a predictable direction rather than cutting across the grain and making marks more obvious over time.

Installation and Finishing

Fitting stainless steel into an existing kitchen is all about neat junctions and sensible sequencing.

Equally important were the edges and returns. Worktops in busy kitchens must be impact resistant. A carefully designed edge detail helps with longevity.

Result

The outcome is a kitchen that feels easier to run and easier to look after. Stainless steel worktops give the team a surface that suits a commercial pace, and the splashbacks provide practical protection while lifting the overall feel of the room. Most importantly, the club achieved this without the disruption and cost of replacing the full kitchen. They kept what was still doing its job, and upgraded what was holding them back.

It’s important to us what this project represents for us locally. Copthorne Social Club is a community organisation – part of our local area, and we pride ourselves on being part of our local community, providing metal fabrication services, employment for our team, and being part of a network of suppliers, builders, and subcontractors.

If you have an existing space that needs to work harder, but you are not keen on a full strip-out, retrofitting can be a smart route. It is often the difference between “good enough” and a kitchen that is genuinely set up for service.

Metal Spiral Staircase: A Space-Saving Statement with Design Credibility

A metal spiral staircase is one of the few architectural features that can do more with less. It results in a smaller footprint, less obstruction, less visual clutter, but with the right approach, far more design impact. Whether it’s a compact solution in a tight site or a centrepiece in a communal space, metal spiral stairs give architects a way to work vertically without defaulting to bland and uninspired.

At Formost Fabrications, we fabricate spiral staircases that hold their own structurally and aesthetically. Every stair we produce is custom-made for the environment it serves, and when it comes to spiral configurations, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all.

Designed for Real-World Use

We often see spiral stairs specified to save space, but it’s not just about square footage. It’s about flow, compliance, and context. We design metal spiral staircases with:

Proper tread width and riser height to meet Approved Document K

Support structures that don’t dominate the space

Guarding and handrails that are continuous and comfortable

These are stairs you can have confidence in and actually feel good about using, rather than a simple transition between floors.

More Than Just Mild Steel

Our spiral staircases can be fabricated in mild steel, stainless steel, or aluminium, depending on the structural needs and finish goals of the project. A powder-coated mild steel staircase might suit a school or commercial space, while a stainless steel and glass combination can elevate a hospitality or high-end residential brief.

You can also pair materials for effect. For example: perforated treads with a solid stringer, or a steel post system with frameless glass guarding.

Spiral Stairs That Integrate with the Architecture

We don’t believe in tacking on access after the fact. We work from your layouts or concepts to integrate the spiral stair into the scheme from the beginning. That means aligning balustrade posts with slab edges or core walls, coordinating transitions to the other floors, and making sure your spiral doesn’t feel like an afterthought.

Whether you’re dealing with a tight footprint or trying to make a visual statement, spiral stairs can do both, but only with careful detailing.

Engineering That Doesn’t Get in the Way

With a spiral stair, every fixing, connection and bracket is visible, so we make sure those details are up to standard. From laser-cut treads to concealed bolt fixings, we’re always thinking about how the stair looks, way ahead of when it’s built.

Because we handle the full process in-house, we’re able to exact these details without introducing cost or delay later down the line. It’s the sort of polish that makes a spiral staircase more than just a tool for access.

Spiral Staircases for Exterior Environments

While a lot of our spiral work is internal, we also fabricate metal spiral stairs for outdoor spaces, including fire escapes, rooftop access, and external balconies. These are built with durability in mind: galvanised steel, grippy treads, 316-grade stainless steel, and powder-coated finishes designed to stand up to the British weather.

The spiral form can actually be a major advantage externally; it typically means less bulk, more openness, and a way to preserve sightlines on façades. For commercial developments with tight egress requirements, or schools that need a secure escape stair in a narrow zone, spiral staircases are often the smartest fit.

If you’re designing a project where space is limited but visual quality still matters, a metal spiral staircase might be the right call. Get in touch early and we’ll help you make the most of it.

FAQs

What size can a metal spiral staircase be?

We custom-fabricate all our spiral staircases, so sizes can be tailored to your project. Typical diameters range from 1200mm to 2000mm, depending on use class and available space.

Are your spiral staircases compliant with UK Building Regulations?

Yes. Our spiral stairs are designed to meet Approved Document K, including going, rise, and handrail requirements for the specific type of use, be it domestic, commercial or public.

Can you design spiral stairs for outdoor use?

Absolutely. We offer external-grade materials, including galvanised steel and 316 stainless steel, and we account for slip resistance, weatherproofing, and durability in all external applications.

Can I customise the finish or materials?

Yes. We can offer powder coating in a wide range of RAL colours, as well as mixed-material options like timber treads or glass balustrading, depending on the setting and intent.

Do spiral staircases work in public or commercial spaces?

They can, especially where space is tight or a visual feature is desired. We’ll ensure they meet all safety, circulation and durability standards for high-traffic areas.

How do you support a spiral staircase structurally?

That depends on the context. Central columns, wall tie-ins, base fixings and intermediate landings can all be designed into the system to keep things stable and secure.

Is there a difference between spiral and helical stairs?

Yes. Spiral stairs rotate around a central point (usually a column), whereas helical stairs sweep in a curve without a central support. We offer both depending on the brief.

How long does installation take?

Once fabrication is complete, most spiral staircases can be installed in a few days. We’ll advise lead times at the design stage and coordinate site logistics with your team.

Can you help at the design stage?

Definitely. We often work with architects and designers at RIBA Stage 3 or earlier to develop spiral stair concepts that are buildable, compliant and visually aligned with the rest of the scheme.

Do you offer nationwide installation?

Yes, we install spiral staircases across mainland UK and manage logistics in-house to ensure safe and efficient delivery to site.

Mezzanine Stairs That Do More Than Link Two Levels

A mezzanine floor is almost always a practical addition. It adds usable space without the cost of a full extension, unlocks vertical volume, and can bring structure to open-plan layouts. But too often, mezzanine stairs get treated as an afterthought: purely functional, minimally designed, and badly coordinated with the scheme around them.

At Formost Fabrications, we think stairs for mezzanine floors should do more. They’re a visible, heavily used part of the space and, when designed properly, a mezzanine staircase becomes a feature that connects levels, enhances flow, and feels like it belongs. Here’s what that takes.

Beyond Bolt-On: Mezzanine Staircases as Part of the Scheme

We’re not here to drop in a staircase and call it done. If the stair doesn’t integrate with your layout, your finishes, or your fall protection strategy, it’s not really working. That’s why we design mezzanine stairs with more than just rise and run in mind.

Things like:

Aligning the stair and balustrade posts with mezzanine steelwork or slab zones so detailing looks intentional.

Creating clean transitions between floor, stair stringer, and any guarding, especially where glass or open tread designs are involved.

We’ve had projects where a well-placed change in stair direction has unlocked more usable space below the mezzanine. Or where a slight tweak to stair angle kept the handrail clear of a curtain wall mullion. These are small shifts, but they change how the space works, and they don’t happen without early input.

Material Choices That Respect Context

A lot of mezzanine floor stairs end up as mild steel frames and chequer plate treads. That’s fine in a back-of-house warehouse. But if your mezzanine sits in a client-facing zone, or forms part of the customer experience, there’s more to consider.

What matters is that the stair speaks the same language as the rest of the space. In other words, that it doesn’t feel like a tacked-on tool for access, but a deliberate architectural connection between levels.

Safety Standards Without Sacrificing Aesthetics

It’s easy to overbuild a mezzanine staircase in the name of compliance, and end up with something clunky. But safety doesn’t mean heavy-handed.

We routinely design to meet or exceed mezzanine floor safety standards without over-engineering the aesthetic. That means:

Balustrade and guarding heights to suit the use case.

Non-slip treads for high-traffic areas without making everything look industrial.

Proper landings, headroom, and handrail detailing for both comfort and compliance.

You shouldn’t have to choose between something that looks right and something that passes Building Control. Done well, you get both.

Designed to Be Installed Without Drama

Every mezzanine floor is different. Column locations, access zones, ceiling heights; none of it’s plug-and-play. That’s why we design every mezzanine staircase specifically for the site, using layout drawings, site surveys, and CAD models where needed.

Because we fabricate and install in-house, we also know what happens when you don’t plan properly. Our experience means that we build to fit the real-world tolerances, not just the drawings. We give you fewer surprises on install day and a smoother experience for everyone involved.

If you’re designing or specifying mezzanine floor stairs, especially for a commercial, public, or visually prominent setting, get us involved early. We’ll help you create stairs that don’t just link the levels, but elevate the entire space.

Call to action

To talk to us about a bespoke mezzanine staircase, or to involve us early in a project with vertical circulation, give us a call or send over your plans.
FAQs

What types of mezzanine stairs do you offer?

We design and fabricate mezzanine stairs for commercial, industrial, and public environments. That includes access stairs, escape stairs, feature stairs, and utility staircases.

Are your mezzanine staircases compliant with building regulations?

Yes, every stair we produce is designed to meet UK safety standards and building regulations, including dimensions, loadings, handrail requirements, and fire strategy inputs.

Can you work with architects and designers during the planning stage?

Absolutely. We often work alongside architects during early RIBA stages to develop staircase layouts that match the overall scheme.

Do you handle both design and installation?

Stainless Steel Glass Balustrade Systems for Commercial and High-Traffic Spaces

A stainless steel glass balustrade is one of the cleanest ways to make a space feel open without compromising on safety. You get unobstructed views, strong edge protection, and a finish that holds up in busy environments. For architects and specifiers, it is also a straightforward way to keep sightlines clean across stair voids, mezzanines, and a glass balcony detail, while still meeting building regulations.

At Formost Fabrications, we design, fabricate and install stainless steel and glass balustrade solutions across the mainland UK, with a focus on commercial settings where durability and consistency matter. Whether you are specifying for indoor and outdoor use, or you need a system that stays sharp in high-traffic areas, the details are what make it work.

What Makes Stainless Steel And Glass So Widely Specified

There is a reason steel and glass balustrades turn up in offices, public buildings, hospitality venues and modern residential developments. Done well, they look intentional rather than heavy. Stainless steel offers strength at the posts and handrail, while the glass panel keeps the visual field clear.

A good glass balustrade system also suits mixed material palettes. It sits comfortably alongside timber stair treads, stone finishes, painted walls, and exposed structural elements. In other words, it does not demand attention; it supports the architecture.

From a practical perspective, stainless steel is also predictable. You can specify grades, understand performance, and build maintenance plans around it. That matters when the building will be used by hundreds of people a day.

Post Systems: The Backbone Of A Stainless Steel Glass Balustrade

Most commercial schemes lean towards a post system because it is robust and adaptable on site. A post system uses stainless steel posts and fixings to support each glass panel at regular centres, with the posts acting as the structural frame.

There is flexibility here, both visually and technically. Posts can be top-fixed to slabs, side-fixed to stringers, or positioned to align with façade mullions and grid lines. The best results come when this is coordinated early, rather than treated as a late-stage add-on.

Things like:

Aligning balustrade posts with structural edges so the base fixings stay neat and rational.

Setting post centres to suit the glass panel sizes and avoid awkward, narrow infills at the ends.

This is where a stainless steel and glass balustrade stops looking like a kit and starts looking like part of the building.

Glass Thickness, Safety Glass, And Real-World Spec Decisions

For many commercial stair and balcony applications, you will see 10mm thick toughened glass mentioned; sometimes more depending on span, loading, and whether the glass is acting as the infill only or part of a more structural arrangement.

The important thing is not to reduce it to a number. Glass thickness depends on the application, the fixing method, and the load requirements, especially at busy edges and balcony lines.

A stainless steel glass balustrade should always use appropriate toughened glass and certified safety glass, designed around the correct performance standards. This is not an area for guesswork, particularly in public and commercial environments where the balustrade is touched, leaned on, and tested constantly.

We work with specifiers to get this right early, so the balustrade system meets building regulations without last-minute redesign.

316 Grade Stainless Steel: When It Matters

Not all stainless steel is equal. In many indoor settings, a standard grade may perform perfectly well. For exposed outdoor conditions, coastal environments, or areas with aggressive pollution and moisture, 316 grade stainless steel is often the sensible choice.

If you are specifying a stainless steel glass balustrade for a terrace, rooftop, or an external stair, it is worth thinking about this upfront. It affects the long-term appearance and maintenance requirements. Stainless steel that pits or stains prematurely becomes a visual problem, and it also creates an avoidable facilities burden.

Indoor And Outdoor Use Without The Usual Compromises

One reason stainless steel and glass balustrade systems are so popular is that the same core approach can work for indoor and outdoor schemes. The difference is how you detail it.

External balustrades need weather-resilient fixings, careful water management at baseplates, and sensible drainage considerations around the edge condition.

Indoor balustrades often need a sharper focus on touchpoints, cleaning routines, and the way the posts interface with finishes like polished concrete, stone, or timber.

A well-designed system avoids the usual compromises. It can feel lightweight, stay stable, and still meet the same safety expectations in both contexts.

Maintenance Requirements: The Bit Everyone Forgets Until Handover

A stainless steel and glass balustrade looks effortless, but it still benefits from a maintenance plan. In high-traffic commercial spaces, the handrail and posts will show fingerprints, cleaning chemicals may be used daily, and small scuffs can build up over time.

The good news is that maintenance is manageable if the system has been specified properly. Stainless steel posts with the right finish, combined with appropriate glass cleaning access, generally keeps the balustrade looking good for the long term. The bad news is that poor detailing makes cleaning harder than it needs to be, especially around post bases and junctions.

This is one of the reasons it helps to involve us early. If we can influence the detailing, we can help keep the system both attractive and practical to maintain.

Why Work With Formost Fabrications

When you specify a stainless steel glass balustrade, you are usually trying to achieve clarity: clear views, clear edges, a clean line through the space. That clarity lives or dies in the detailing. It is not just the product choice; it is how it is fabricated, set out, and installed.

At Formost Fabrications, we support architects, contractors and facilities teams with balustrade systems that are designed around the building, not forced onto it. We fabricate to suit your setting-out and coordination requirements, we understand how these systems behave in real life, and we install with the care you would expect on projects where finish quality matters.

If you are planning steel and glass balustrades for a stair core, mezzanine, or glass balcony edge, talk to us early. You will still get a high-quality installation at the end, but you will also get input that makes the system cleaner and easier to live with.

FAQ

Is a stainless steel glass balustrade suitable for indoor and outdoor use?

Yes. Stainless steel and glass balustrade systems work well in both settings, provided the grade, fixings and detailing are suited to the environment; external installations need extra attention to weathering and water management.

What glass thickness should I specify for a glass balustrade?

It depends on the application, spans and load requirements. You may see 10mm thick toughened glass used in some settings, but the correct specification should be confirmed against the relevant standards for the project.

What is a post system, and when is it the right choice?

A post system uses stainless steel posts and fixings to support each glass panel. It is a strong, adaptable option for commercial buildings because it is robust, easier to coordinate on site, and straightforward to maintain.

Do I need 316 grade stainless steel?

If the balustrade is exposed to harsh weather, coastal air, or higher moisture levels, 316 grade is often the better choice. For sheltered indoor environments, other grades can be suitable; it is worth deciding early because it impacts long-term appearance.

How do maintenance requirements differ between stainless and other materials?

Stainless steel is generally low maintenance, but it will show fingerprints and needs sensible cleaning routines in high-traffic spaces. The right finish specification and detailing around bases and junctions makes upkeep much easier.

Can you help with setting-out and coordination on commercial projects?

Yes. We regularly work with architects and contractors to align balustrade posts with structural grids and finishes, avoid awkward end conditions, and ensure the stainless steel glass balustrade looks intentional once installed.

Commercial Building Canopy Design for Schools, Shopfronts, and Public Spaces

Commercial building canopy design is one of those elements that everyone notices, even if they don’t comment on it. It shapes first impressions at the entrance, it influences how people move through outdoor spaces, and it quietly decides whether a space feels usable or exposed. When commercial building canopy design is treated as a standard add-on, the result usually looks like it. When it’s designed properly, a canopy becomes part of the architecture.

At Formost Fabrications, we approach canopy design as a blend of practical shelter and visual intent. We design, fabricate and install bespoke canopies for commercial settings across the South East, working with architects, contractors, and facilities teams who want something that sits naturally with the building rather than fighting it.

Start With Behaviour, Not The Bracket

Good commercial building canopy design begins with how people actually use the space.

A shop front canopy design has to cope with constant foot traffic and signage sightlines.

A school canopy design has to deal with drop-off surges, wet coats, and prams, plus the reality that kids will climb, swing, and run along whatever you build.

A glass canopy design might be perfect for a reception entrance where light matters, but it has different cleaning, glare, and detailing considerations than a steel frame canopy.

If we’re brought in early, we can help shape a canopy that supports the way the building functions. That might mean shelter over an entrance, but it could just as easily mean covered walkways that connect buildings, canopies and shelters that reduce slip risk at thresholds, or a canopy that creates an outdoor dining area that actually feels inviting even in February.

Bespoke Canopy Design Brings Control Back To The Scheme

A lot of canopies are designed to be installed anywhere, which means they never look like they belong anywhere. Bespoke commercial building canopy design gives you control over proportion, fixing strategy, and edge detailing, and those are the differences architects and designers tend to care about most.

Things like:

Choosing a steel frame depth that aligns with façade lines and avoids chunky, overbearing edges.

Setting the canopy projection to protect the entrance without swallowing the elevation.

Designing drainage properly so water does not become a constant drip line over the main approach.

That is where aesthetic appeal comes from, not from adding decorative flourishes. Clean, intentional geometry reads as higher quality, even before anyone touches the handrail.

School Canopy Design That Supports Outdoor Learning And Real Life

School canopies are one of the most useful canopy types because they do more than cover a doorway. They create outdoor classroom zones, sheltered play area spaces, and calmer areas for outdoor learning.

A good canopy for schools needs to be robust, safe, and easy to maintain. It also needs to handle high-usage patterns without looking battered after one term. We create school canopy designs with durability in mind, but also with the flow of the site in mind, because the best school canopies guide movement between buildings, reduce pinch points, and create covered walkways that make the whole campus feel more connected.

UV protection can also matter more than people expect, particularly for south-facing outdoor classrooms where pupils might be spending longer periods outside in warmer months.

Glass Canopy Design, Done With Restraint

Glass canopy design looks exceptional when it is detailed properly. They keep entrances light, avoid heavy visual blocks on glazed elevations, and help maintain a clean, contemporary feel. The risk is that poor detailing makes them look fussy, with too many visible fixings or awkward supports.

When we fabricate a glass canopy design, we treat it as part of a wider entrance canopy’s composition, not a floating sheet of glazing. The support structure, bracketry, and junctions need to look intentional, and they need to handle weather conditions without constant intervention. If the brief is minimalism, the detailing has to earn it.

Shop Front Canopy Design That Balances Branding And Shelter

Shop front canopy design is often expected to do three jobs at once: protect the entrance, support signage visibility, and look appropriate on a busy street. A canopy that is too deep can darken the shopfront and make it feel closed off. Too shallow and it offers little weather protection, which defeats the point.

We design bespoke canopies for shopfronts that sit comfortably within the elevation, and that can be finished to suit the brand, whether that is subtle powder coating or a deliberately bold colour. For hospitality, these canopies can extend the usable footprint by creating outdoor dining areas that feel deliberate rather than temporary, which can be a cost effective way to improve the customer experience without major internal changes.

Canopies And Shelters For Connected Sites

On larger sites, canopies offer more value when they become a system. Covered walkways between entrances, sheltered queue areas, and transition points all reduce weather exposure and improve accessibility. For facilities teams, that can mean fewer slip incidents and less water tracked inside. For design teams, it means the external circulation starts to feel designed, not improvised.

Because we handle bespoke design, fabrication and installation in-house, we can develop a coherent range of canopies that match across a site, rather than mixing unrelated products that age differently and look inconsistent after a few winters.

Cost-Effective Doesn’t Mean Cheap

Cost-effective canopy design is usually about lifespan and maintenance, not about shaving the initial quote. A canopy that lasts, resists weathering, and fits the building cleanly tends to pay for itself through reduced repairs and fewer replacements. It also protects the building fabric, doors, thresholds, and finishes, which is easy to forget until you see how quickly exposed entrances wear.

We focus on bespoke canopies that are built properly, installed properly, and designed to keep looking right over time.

If you are working on commercial building canopy design for a school, a public-facing building, a shopfront, or a connected site with outdoor spaces, we can help you shape a canopy that performs and elevates the elevation rather than cluttering it.

If you want to talk commercial building canopy design, get in touch with Formost Fabrications. Our installation teams work across the South East, and we’re happiest when we’re involved early enough to improve the outcome, not just assemble it.

FAQ

Do you design and install bespoke canopies, or only fabricate them?

We provide a complete service, including bespoke design, fabrication and installation. That keeps the detailing consistent and avoids the usual handover issues that can dilute the final finish.

What’s the difference between a standard canopy and bespoke canopy design?

A standard product is made to fit “most” buildings; bespoke canopy design is tailored to your façade, circulation routes, and site behaviour. It usually looks cleaner, performs better, and integrates more naturally.

Can you support school canopy design for outdoor learning areas?

Yes. We design school canopies for outdoor classrooms, play area cover, and sheltered circulation routes. We can also help plan covered walkways to reduce weather exposure across the site.

Is glass canopy design suitable for commercial entrances?

It can be, particularly where you want to keep the entrance bright and maintain a light elevation. The key is good detailing, appropriate support, and a plan for weather conditions and cleaning access.

Are entrance canopies a cost effective upgrade for commercial buildings?

Often, yes. Entrance canopies protect thresholds, reduce slip risk, and improve comfort for visitors and staff. Over time, a well-built canopy can reduce maintenance on doors and entrance finishes.

Do you handle shop front canopy design for hospitality and retail?

We do. Shop front canopy design can support weather protection, improve the feel of the entrance, and help create outdoor dining areas or sheltered waiting zones when planned properly.

Architectural Metalwork: Why Designers Should Involve Fabricators Sooner

Architectural metalwork sits at the intersection of structural integrity and visual intent. It’s where a stairway becomes a sculpture, a canopy becomes a statement, and a balustrade guides the eye as much as it guides the user. Too often, however, bespoke architectural metalwork is treated as a finishing touch, rather than something to be designed in from the start.

At Formost Fabrications, we’re seeing more architects and designers bring us in earlier, and the results speak for themselves. When the conversation starts during RIBA Stage 2 or 3, not Stage 5, you get more than just a well-made install; you get detailing that aligns with your scheme, metal finishes that pair correctly with the rest of the palette, and practical refinements that reduce rework down the line.

Whether it’s a sweeping staircase in a corporate atrium or architectural metalwork installations for outdoor circulation routes, the earlier we’re looped in, the more useful we can be. Here’s why that matters.

Design-Led Detailing, Not Just Value Engineering

When fabricators are brought in late, their job is often to ‘make it buildable’, which usually means paring something back. As a compromise, baseplates can get larger, fixings can become more visible, and tolerances can widen. If we’ve been involved earlier in the process, the compromises like these are entirely avoidable.

Things like:

Adjusting post locations to align with building control zones and slab edges, while still honouring the visual rhythm.

Choosing bespoke folded steel sections that allow clean junctions without overly thick profiles.

Working out handrail transitions and bracketry before the balustrade clashes with your glazed partition line.

Bespoke architectural metalwork is most successful when the form evolves alongside the fabric. That only happens through collaboration.

Material Input That Strengthens the Scheme

Architectural metalwork doesn’t have to mean ‘default to stainless’. Galvanised finishes, powder-coated mild steel, patinated brass, aluminium… each has its own tone, feel, and context.

We’ve worked on projects where the architect’s concept called for warmth and tactility in high-traffic areas, but the finish initially proposed wouldn’t have met the durability brief. By switching to a waxed mild steel or a coloured powder coat with anti-graffiti properties, the integrity of the visual concept is maintained with added resilience.

This is the kind of support you won’t get from a catalogue supplier. It’s the difference between a subcontractor and a true partner.

More Than a Supplier: A Design Resource

While we do handle fabrication and installation, we’re often most valuable as a sounding board before the spec is even finalised. Our in-house design team can work directly from your early concepts, provide CAD-ready models, and help simplify coordination with other trades.

This might involve:

Reviewing your layouts to flag clashes or complexity before they hit site.

Creating realistic visualisations so your client can sign off with confidence.

Advising on logistics, tolerances, and access at a stage where those inputs can still shape the outcome.

And because we’re used to working on projects from schools to retail developments and listed buildings, we understand the real-world context these installations sit within.

Architectural Metalwork Installations That Elevate the Whole Scheme

We’re not just looking to fill in the metal bits after the fact. We want the staircase that anchors the lobby space. The canopy that frames the entrance experience. The balustrade keeps the glass lines clean without overdoing the structure.

That’s why we’re increasingly working with architects who want more than a trade price; they want considered collaboration.

So if you’re working on a scheme where metal will feature in any meaningful way, whether as a structural element or a design highlight, get us involved early. You’ll still get the high-quality fabrication and smooth installation we’re known for. But you’ll also get input that makes the final result better.

Get in Touch

If you’re an architect, designer or specifier looking to bring high-quality architectural metalwork into your next scheme, we’d love to hear from you. The earlier we talk, the more value we can add, both visually and practically.

Cycle Storage: Galvanised Steel Bike Racks and Shelters

Whether it’s a school, a transport hub, a retail park or a new housing development, cycle storage is no longer a tick-box item. It’s an essential feature that supports healthier travel, reduces car use, and meets modern sustainability goals. However, it also has to work in all weathers, with all types of bikes, and in a way that doesn’t invite tampering, rust, or damage.

At Formost Fabrications, we design, manufacture and install cycle storage solutions that tick every box. Our galvanised steel bike racks and shelters are built to last, tailored to suit their setting, and designed for ease of use by a wide range of cyclists.

Why Galvanised Steel Makes Sense for Cycle Storage

In public environments, longevity is key. Our galvanised steel bike shelters and racks are treated with a zinc coating that offers long-term protection against corrosion, ideal for British weather. This hot-dip galvanising process ensures a protective barrier that prevents rust, even in exposed areas.

Unlike timber or cheaper plastic options, steel is both structurally strong and virtually maintenance free. It’s resistant to warping, denting, and cracking, and holds up well in spaces with high usage or little day-to-day oversight.

Options for Schools, Councils, and Commercial Projects

We work with a range of organisations to supply and install cycle storage sheds, racks and shelters suitable for:

Schools and colleges – where large volumes of bikes need to be stored securely, often under cover.

Councils and public parks – where design, accessibility and durability must go hand in hand.

New developments – from apartment blocks to commercial schemes, where storage capacity and compliance are required.

Transport hubs – where secure, high-capacity bike storage supports greener commuter journeys.

From wall-mounted storage racks to large bike shelters with integrated roofs, we offer a range of options to store multiple bikes safely and securely.

Designs That Work in Practice

We’ve seen enough cracked perspex and wobbly frames to know what doesn’t work. Our cycle storage systems are made from high quality steel, tailored to fit your space, and engineered for daily use. Whether you need a simple storage rack or a fully enclosed bike storage shed, we build with a focus on usability, strength, and visual integration.

Design options include:

Sheffield stands – simple, robust, and compatible with D-locks.

Two-tier racks – to maximise space in compact areas.

Covered shelters – with roof panels, guttering, and rainwater management.

Custom shelters – shaped or coloured to suit brand or setting.

We also offer powder coating for a range of finishes, making the system blend in or stand out depending on your needs.

Built for Modern Bike Use

Today’s users aren’t just turning up on basic commuter bikes. You’ve got folding bikes, electric bikes, cargo bikes, and they all need to be accommodated. That’s why we help you choose the right cycle storage, with the dimensions, spacings and fixings that make sense for real-world users.

We can also incorporate features like:

Extra security fixings and locking points

Tamper-resistant bolt systems

Adjustable racking to suit different frame sizes

Ground fixings for added stability

If required, we’ll also advise on spacing layouts to ensure your system complies with planning requirements or BREEAM specifications.

A Partner for Supply and Install

Formost Fabrications is more than just a supplier. We work with clients from first drawings to final bolt-down, offering a full design, manufacture and install service. That means your bike storage solution will be site-appropriate, well fabricated, and professionally fitted.

Whether you’re ordering five racks or a 30-bike canopy shelter, we take the same care in getting the details right.

📞 01342 719454

FAQs

What is the most durable material for cycle storage systems?

Galvanised steel is widely considered the most durable option. It offers long-term corrosion protection, holds up to heavy use, and resists vandalism better than wood or plastic.

Can your bike storage systems accommodate electric bikes or cargo bikes?

Yes. We tailor our designs to suit modern bike usage, including e-bikes and larger frames. We can increase spacing, adjust fixings, and reinforce structures where needed.

What’s the difference between a bike rack and a bike shelter?

A rack provides secure anchoring for bikes, while a shelter also includes a roof or enclosure to protect bikes from weather. Many clients choose to install both together.

Do you offer powder coating in specific colours?

Absolutely. While many clients opt for a standard galvanised finish, we also offer powder coated options in a wide range of RAL colours to suit your branding or setting.

Are your systems compliant with planning regulations?

Yes. We work to ensure that our cycle storage racks and shelters meet local authority requirements, and we can assist with layouts that support BREEAM, planning or accessibility targets.

Can you help with installation as well as supply?

Yes. We offer a full installation service as part of our package, ensuring everything is anchored correctly and finished to a professional standard.

Smart, Strong, and Made-to-Fit: Metal Office Staircase Fabrication

Not every metal office staircase is made equal, and in a commercial environment, you need more than just a means of getting from one floor to another. You need a structure that’s compliant, durable, and easy to live with. That’s where metal office staircase fabrication comes into its own.

At Formost Fabrications, we specialise in the design and build of metal staircases for public and commercial spaces, with every component tailored to the building’s layout and usage needs. From busy offices and production floors to warehouse staircases and showrooms, our staircases are made to handle the footfall, meet safety standards, and still look the part.

Commercial Staircases That Work Hard

A good commercial staircase has to do several things at once:

Provide safe, non-slip access between levels

Withstand high volumes of use

Comply with fire, access and building regulations

Integrate with the design and function of the space

It might be a main internal feature, or a practical fire escape round the back. It might be exposed steel, powder-coated to match the brand colours, or a smart combination of treads, stringers, and balustrades that blend into a client-facing interior. Either way, it needs to work for people, for compliance, and for the lifespan of the building.

Tailored to the Building

Every one of our metal office staircase fabrication projects starts with the same question: how is the space used?

A staircase for a design agency isn’t the same as one for a logistics depot. That’s why we don’t offer catalogue solutions. We work directly with the building owner, main contractor, or fit-out team to develop a solution that suits both the building and the people moving through it.

That might involve:

Designing a staircase that’s wide enough for two-way foot traffic

Including landings or half-turns to fit tight spaces

Selecting durable materials for high traffic areas

Adding perforated or chequer plate treads for anti-slip performance

Choosing finishes that match interior schemes or brand colours

Whether it’s a standalone flight or a multi-storey installation, we ensure that every staircase is as functional as it is robust.

The Right Materials, The Right Process

We fabricate most commercial staircases in mild steel, though stainless steel may be used for certain environments or finishes. With internal steel staircases, we focus on durability, rigidity, and ease of maintenance. For warehouses or external escapes, we typically use galvanised steel to prevent rust and maintain safety in wet conditions.

Unlike prefabricated solutions, our staircases are designed, manufactured and installed by the same team, which means nothing gets lost in translation. We know the tolerances, the load requirements, and the finish specifications. We also understand what a finished staircase should feel like to use.

We offer:

Bespoke staircase design, developed in collaboration with your team

Full design, manufacture and installation

Fabrication in-house, to ensure consistency and control

Coordination with other trades or site programmes

From Practical to Architectural

A metal staircase doesn’t have to be basic. With the right design approach, it can enhance your commercial space, not just serve it.

We’ve fabricated staircases with integrated glass balustrades, timber treads, LED lighting, and even bespoke railing motifs for reception areas and client-facing spaces. For warehouses, we’ve delivered functional flights with secure landings, slip-resistant treads and high-sided balustrades to separate pedestrian movement from vehicle traffic.

No matter the setting, the core aim is the same: a high quality, high standard staircase that performs reliably for years, and looks like it belongs in the building.

Why Formost Fabrications?

Balustrade Systems for Commercial Buildings: Your Options Explained

Balustrade systems play a vital role in commercial buildings, not only as a safety measure, but also as a design feature that contributes to the look and feel of the space. From offices and shopping centres to schools, healthcare settings, and public access routes, the right balustrade must be durable, compliant, and visually appropriate for its environment.

At Formost Fabrications, we specialise in balustrade systems that are designed, fabricated and installed to meet the demands of high-traffic commercial spaces. In this guide, we take a closer look at your options, especially for glass and stainless steel balustrade systems, and what to consider when choosing the right specification.

Glass Balustrade Systems: Strength in Transparency

Glass balustrade systems are a popular choice for commercial environments where visibility, light, and design cohesion are important. Whether it’s a mezzanine in a corporate headquarters or a staircase in a hotel lobby, the use of toughened safety glass creates a sense of openness without compromising safety.

There are three main configurations:

Frameless glass balustrades: Ideal for spaces that demand clean lines and unobstructed views. These systems typically rely on base channels and clamps to hold the glass securely, often with no visible posts.

Semi-frameless glass balustrades: A balance between minimalism and support. These systems feature discreet stainless steel posts or handrails, offering additional structure without overpowering the design.

Post and rail glass balustrades: These use visible stainless steel posts and top rails to support the glass panels. They’re a practical choice for environments that prioritise durability and ease of maintenance, such as transport hubs, commercial stairwells, or education settings.

Toughened safety glass is the standard for commercial balustrades. It’s engineered to resist impact and, if broken, shatters into small granular pieces rather than sharp shards. Glass thickness varies depending on the span and loading requirements, with 12mm and 15mm glass being common for high-traffic areas.

Stainless Steel Balustrade Systems: Built for Heavy Use

Where glass lends lightness, stainless steel delivers strength and durability. Stainless steel balustrade systems are well suited to staircases, landings, balconies and outdoor terraces where resilience is key.

These systems can either be standalone or used in combination with glass panels. For example, a common configuration in schools or healthcare buildings includes stainless steel posts and handrails with infill panels of toughened glass or horizontal rails.

The benefits of stainless steel include:

Excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications

Low maintenance finish that withstands constant handling

Long life expectancy, even in challenging weather conditions

We work with both brushed and polished finishes, depending on the project’s aesthetic and hygiene requirements.

Balustrade Systems That Meet Building Regulations

All balustrade systems installed in commercial buildings must comply with UK building regulations. These standards cover everything from minimum glass thickness and handrail height, to load resistance and the spacing of any infill elements. A system that looks great but doesn’t pass inspection is not worth the risk.

At Formost Fabrications, we ensure all balustrade designs meet the necessary performance standards, whether they are internal systems, external railings, or installations on balconies and terraces. Our team takes care to specify suitable materials, test structural performance, and produce balustrades that are fit for purpose.

Balustrades for Internal and External Applications

Different locations require different approaches. Internal balustrades tend to focus on visual appeal and integration with architectural elements. External balustrades must prioritise durability and weather resistance.

For outdoor applications, we often recommend stainless steel balustrades with a glass infill or vertical steel rods, treated with galvanisation or powder coating to prevent corrosion. For internal settings, frameless glass balustrades offer the most aesthetically pleasing finish, ideal for reception areas or open-plan office stairwells.

Tailored to Your Environment

No two commercial settings are the same. A balustrade system for a public library might need finger-safe gaps and child-proof spacing. A system for a high-end office development may favour glass panels and minimalist styling. A scheme for a hospital may require durable materials that are easy to clean and free of sharp edges.

That’s why we design each system individually, factoring in use cases, footfall, compliance needs, and design intent. Because we fabricate everything in-house, we have full control over the materials, dimensions, finishes, and details. That means we can adjust, adapt and refine until the system is exactly right.

Why Choose Formost Fabrications

We’re not a supplier of off-the-shelf balustrades. Every system we make is fabricated to order, specifically for the site in question. We work closely with contractors, architects, and facilities teams to deliver balustrade systems that are practical, compliant, and aesthetically aligned with the building’s wider design.

From technical drawings and site surveys to fabrication and installation, we manage the whole process. We keep your project on time and ensure the balustrade performs for years to come.
